Finding Community:
A Residency and Exhibition Opportunity at the Art Gallery of Bancroft
November 4  29, 2025

This thematic artist-in-residence opportunity is directed toward emerging Canadian Indigenous artists

We invite emerging artists of all disciplines to apply for a residency centered on the theme of Finding Community. In a time of shifting connections, we seek creative works that explore the many ways communities are formed, nurtured, and reimagined. How do we connect in an increasingly fragmented world? What does it mean to belong, and how are communities formed across different spaces and identities? Whether through personal experiences, collective action, or cultural intersections, we encourage submissions that delve into the dynamics of belonging, solidarity, and shared identity.

During this self-directed residency, the selected artist will set up a studio workplace within the gallery’s exhibition space. For the month of November 2025, the artist will work in the “studio” during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 4pm. Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to see the artist’s work in progress and the artist will have the opportunity to share development of their projects with the public. Works created and begun during the residency will be exhibited at the gallery in May of 2026 in a joint exhibition with the Spring 2025 artist in residence.

The concept of community may be interpreted in many ways beyond the obvious geographic and cultural meanings; the artist is free to determine and make work that reflects their own interpretation(s). Artists are asked to write an up to 500-word project proposal sharing with us how your artistic practice engages with this theme and outlining ways in which the gallery space will be set up and used. We are especially interested in hearing how this residency within a public gallery could further your exploration of these ideas. Please  submit up to 10 images of your work in support of the proposal. Submit to agb.curatorial@gmail.com

There is no fee to apply. Artists will receive $1,500 for the residency month and Carfac fees for the exhibition. This residency is made possible through an Ontario Arts Council grant. Artists are responsible for securing and paying for their own accommodation for the duration of the residency. The Art Gallery of Bancroft will try to facilitate finding accommodation if needed, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the selected artist.
