This is an intensive, hands-on workshop that will explore two of the most essential professional practice skills that you will need to get your artwork out to the public: how to photodocument your work; and how to present your portfolio so that people pay attention.
Morning
We will start in the morning by looking at the do’s and don’ts of photographing your artwork. This presentation will be followed up by a hands-on set up with lights, camera and tripods. The emphasis will be on how to achieve good results without having to resort to big price tech or requiring advanced photographic skills.
Afternoon
We will begin by looking at how to organize the visuals in your portfolio so that they have the maximum impact. What to put in, in what order, and what to leave out. How your portfolio should change depending on who you are targeting. Part of this session will introduce software like Photoshop to correct your photography. Don’t panic – no experience required.
This presentation will be followed up by in-session analysis of participants’ individual portfolios.
Friendly and positive commentary on what is working and where you might improve.
To bring (optional):
Your camera or cell phone, a small to medium sized piece of artwork (either 2D or 3D)
Your portfolio in a digital format. We suggest combining the images into a single PDF.

About David
As a kid, David McClyment kept himself amused by drawing monsters, explosions and all kinds of adventures. Not much has changed. He has been drawing for over 70 years now and over 45 years as an exhibiting artist. In that time he has had over 45 solo shows and participated in an equal number of group exhibitions.
His work has been shown in all kinds of venues, including artist-run centres, public galleries, commercial galleries and pop up spaces. Mostly in Toronto, but also around Ontario and in Europe.
McClyment had been represented by the David Kaye Gallery in Toronto’s West Queen West district until the gallery closed in 2018. McClyment has been a proud member of the Red Head Gallery since 2021.
In addition to his creative career, McClyment has mentored hundreds of emerging artists as they begin their creative journey. As professor and Co-ordinator of the Fine Arts Studio program at Centennial College he was honoured with a number of awards for teaching excellence.
He is daily inspired by his long-time reason for living, Sue Bracken, and their eminently talented son, Jaimie.
