Exhibition overview

This body of work reflects my experiences living in our rural community during a global pandemic. When coming up with ideas I asked myself: what were the trends in behavior and activities locally and, more generally, in Canada and the rest of the world that arose in response to the Covid-19 crisis? What brought us comfort and helped us cope during this unprecedented time of social isolation and uncertainty? The subject matter and themes of these paintings will be relatable to many people who live in this area. Frequently over the past two and a half years, neighbours have expressed gratitude for the luxury of space and ready access to the outdoors. Broadly speaking, people everywhere found solace in nature. For me, the pandemic lockdowns and isolation afforded time to study the natural world more intensely. There are paintings that are pure landscape and botanical studies reflecting this and ones exploring trends that occupied many people such as bird-watching, seed-starting, puzzles and word games, raising chickens, making maple syrup, sewing, etc. The sound collage compliments the themes in the artwork and further explores activities and routines from the past two years both outside and within the home, where family shared space 24/7. Together my aim is to join both visual and audio cues to create an in-depth representation of my world in the anxiety-filled shadow of Covid-19 and because “we are all in this together”, my hope is that it resonates with gallery visitors by presenting a shared experience of a unique time.

Artist Bio

I live in an old log cabin 20 minutes from town. It is on a property that my parents purchased in 1969 and, after living here and in Toronto off and on my whole life, we settled here full time in 2004. Since graduating with a Fine Art degree from the University of Toronto in 1996, I have been painting with water colour, mixed media and lino-cut printmaking. Living off the grid and surrounded by wilderness for many years, it is no surprise that my work is informed by this immersion in nature. Patterned and stylized interpretations of scenery, plants, animals and the machinery and activities of the local population – both contemporary and historical – are themes I like to explore.

Along with my painting practice, I enjoy working on community-engaged art projects, creating public art, teaching art to all ages. In 2016 Doubleday published The Canadian Backwoods Colouring Book featuring forty pictures of this beautiful area in all seasons. I was featured in a CBC series about rural artists called “Off the Grid” that aired on the arts show The Exhibitionists in May 2019. Since 2002 I have been an annual participant in the Bancroft and Area Studio Tour and value the connections with other local artists I have made in that group, as well as through other avenues in our thriving arts community.
