Artist statement
Recently, due to the COVID 19 restrictions and lockdowns I spent a great deal of time in nature, reflecting on the healing properties and connectedness that comes from nature and landscape.
During the pandemic I produced naturalistic paintings from the time I spent in nature. The purpose of the work was to reflect on time, space, rejuvenation, and reflection that these spaces offer. The paintings also look at the reciprocal relationship between us and the landscape, while also understanding our own cyclical nature and the birth, death, and rebirth within our natural environments.
This notion has been displayed in my earlier Urban-scapes which reflect the construction and reconstruction that takes place in urban environments as they encroach and expand into the natural environment.
My previous work has had an ongoing interest with the fluidity and potential for motion in paint, exploring systems of representation and modes of expression. Painting is loaded with history and language, and connecting within this dialogue is the task of the artist, shaping and informing the fabric of our personal and cultural identity.
