“Compass Rose”
Acrylic/canvas on birch panel, 30” x 28”
Compass Rose signifies guidance (a compass) on a journey of reconciliation, an aid in maintaining orientation during the movement between a shared vision and the individual paths followed.
“Good Earth Basket“
Acrylic/canvas on birch panel, 31” x 28.5”
Good Earth Basket evokes the great weave of life on Earth, in which each thread is a story that’s accounted for, has its place, is woven together into a beneficent basket of life we are called to care for.
The idea underlying my paintings in this exhibition is a deep acknowledgement of a fundamental unity underlying and encompassing the vast diversity of nature and ways of being in the world.
It is a call to participate in finding and acting upon a shared vision for the health of all and the Earth. This means working toward healing the past and moving in directions of reconciliation: including listening to voices that have not been heard, valuing Indigenous stories and perspectives.
Efforts in this direction are interwoven and celebrated in these two paintings.
Carolyn Jongeward creates abstract acrylic paintings and textile art. Long-time experience as tapestry weaver informs her work, as does an ongoing interest in the expressive dynamism of colour, pattern, and texture. Her work conveys the energy of vibrant and subtle colour relations, and she seeks the lively edge between hidden order and sudden surprise. Her creative process in tapestry design and weaving is the subject of the book Weaver of Worlds. Her tapestries have been exhibited in Canada, USA, and UK and are held in private and corporate collections.
She has taught courses and workshops on tapestry, design, colour, and creative process in Canada and abroad. She has an MA from the Royal College of Art in London, England, and an EdD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. She lives and works in the beautiful North Kawartha region of Ontario.

The Art Gallery of Bancroft is situated on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg Algonquins, which is known to be unceded. Indigenous people have been stewards of this land since time immemorial; as such we honour and respect their connection to the land, its plants, animals and stories. Our recognition of the contributions and historic importance of Indigenous peoples is sincerely aligned to our collective commitment to make the promise and the challenge of truth and reconciliation real in our community.
