Comments from the shows’ curator, Leilah Ward:

In June of 2006 a group of friends in the Hillcrest and Wychwood neighbourhoods of Toronto, who pursued art through textiles and fibre, got together to create a show of work at St. Matthew’s United Church Musicraft Festival on St. Clair Avenue West. They have been exhibiting together in various venues ever since, under the name of Hillcrest Village Fibreworks.

Leilah Ward, a member of the Art Gallery of Bancroft Curatorial Committee met some of the members of Hillcrest Village Fibreworks at the house of a friend at a “sewing” weekend. “I’m not really into sewing, but was beginning an attempt at knitting my first sweater, and I was happy to be part of a girls’ weekend,” said Leilah. “My friend Pamela Woodward is part of the Hillcrest group and at this gathering three other members of the group were there. I was amazed at the creativity and diversity that these women had for working with fibre and was inspired to put together a fibre art exhibition with some other fibre artists in the Bancroft area. So, the show ‘Expressions in Fiber’ was born.” The exhibit showcases very diverse ways of creating with fibre, such as combining multi-media, quilting, silk painting, fabric dyeing, collage, and “painting” with thread.
