About the Exhibition

Turbulent Heart is a collection of recent works that are largely focused on the abstract nature of our universe.

These emotive paintings arise from and reflect the deep connection and bond we have with the land on which we live our lives and to which, ultimately, we are returned.

Some of the works mark the increasingly dramatic climatic changes that we are experiencing and seeing around us while others are colourful, simply playful abstractions of the themes of sky, land and water.

Artist Statement

Much of my work is linked to the pristine landscape that surrounds me: the lake, forest and uninterrupted skyscape are the foundation of every piece that I paint.  Natural phenomena – fall colour, northern lights, a colourful sunset, lunar eclipse, thunderstorm or a certain quality of light – all of these find their way into my work as the expression of an idea or memory of landscape.  These are vibrant, colourful pieces that often straddle the divide between the objective and the abstract.

I paint to loud rock music, allowing the rhythms and driving beat to carry me past conscious thought to that place where creativity lives: the place where imperfect memory collides with the emotion of the observed, sometimes with explosively colourful results, at other times calmer, more evocative of landscape.

A visual artist whose primary focus is abstraction, I have been living and working in North Kawartha since graduating OCA(D) with honours (fine art drawing and painting). Using acrylic and mixed media on various grounds, my practice has explored such diverse themes as democracy, international politics, the AIDS pandemic, familial relationships, surviving cancer and, always, the abstract nature of our universe.
